Vetoba Temple, Aravali
Temple · Vengurla, Sindhudurg
The temple of Vetoba, a guardian deity much loved in Sindhudurg, at Aravali near Shiroda.
Aravali, a village near Shiroda in Vengurla taluka, is home to the temple of Shri Vetoba. Vetoba is worshipped across the Konkan as a protector of the village, and the Aravali temple is one of his best-known shrines in Sindhudurg.
A well-known custom here is the offering of large leather footwear (chappals) to the deity. Devotees believe Vetoba walks around the village at night to protect it, and wears out his footwear, so new pairs are offered when wishes are fulfilled.
The temple is a living place of worship, busy during festivals and on special days, and quiet at other times. Visitors are welcome; dress modestly and follow the customs of the temple.
Aravali is close to the Shiroda beach and Redi, so it fits easily into a day along the southern Sindhudurg coast.
