Vengurla Rocks (Burnt Islands)
Nature · Vengurla, Sindhudurg
A group of rocky islets with a lighthouse off the Vengurla coast, known to birdwatchers for nesting seabirds and swiftlets.
Out at sea off the Vengurla coast lies a small group of rocky islets, known as the Vengurla Rocks or Burnt Islands. A lighthouse on the islands guides ships along this part of the coast, and on clear days the rocks are visible from the shore at Vengurla and Nivati.
The islands are important for birds. Seabirds rest and nest on them, and their caves are known as a nesting site of swiftlets, small birds that build their nests from their own saliva. Because of this, the islands are of special interest to naturalists.
The islands are not a regular tourist spot, and landing on them is not usually allowed or practical. Most people enjoy them from the coast or from boat trips that pass nearby; ask local boat operators what is permitted.
Never disturb nesting birds, and travel only with experienced operators when the sea is calm.
Best time to visit
November to April, on calm, clear days.
