Kunkeshwar Temple, Devgad
Temple · Devgad, Sindhudurg
An ancient Shiva temple on the shore south of Devgad, standing right beside the beach and famous for its Mahashivratri fair.
Kunkeshwar is one of the most important Shiva temples of the Konkan. It stands right on the shore at Kunkeshwar village south of Devgad, so the sound of the waves reaches the temple courtyard, and the beach in front of it is long and clean.
The temple is old and much revered, and the main festival is Mahashivratri, when a large fair (yatra) draws devotees from across Sindhudurg and beyond. On ordinary days it is peaceful, and many people visit for the darshan and then walk on the beach.
The Devgad area is famous for its Alphonso mangoes, and Devgad fort, the Tambaldeg and Mithbav beaches and Vijaydurg are all within reach for a longer trip.
Dress modestly at the temple. The beach is good for walking, but swim only in calm water near the shore.
