Devgad Fort and Lighthouse
Fort · Devgad, Sindhudurg
A coastal fort on a headland at Devgad harbour, with a working lighthouse and views over the bay and the town's fishing fleet.
Devgad fort sits on the headland that shelters Devgad harbour, one of the main fishing harbours of Sindhudurg. Much of the old fort wall still runs around the hill, and a lighthouse inside the fort still guides boats into the bay.
The walk around the fort gives wide views: the open sea on one side and on the other the calm bay, the town and the colourful fishing boats in the harbour. Evenings are especially pleasant, when the boats return and the lighthouse comes on.
Devgad is famous across India for its Alphonso mangoes, and in the season (roughly March to May) the mango orchards around the town are busy with harvest and packing.
The fort is open ground with uneven walls; take care near the edges, especially with children.
Best time to visit
