Tsunami Island, Devbag

Nature · Malvan, Sindhudurg

A sandbar in the Karli river mouth near Devbag, reached by boat, popular for water sports and views of the meeting of river and sea.

Tsunami Island is the local name for a sandbar in the mouth of the Karli river, close to Devbag. People say it took its present shape after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which is how it got its name. It is not a village or a resort: it is open sand in the middle of the water, and its size changes with the tide and the season.

Boats run to the island from the Devbag and Tarkarli jetties. On the island and around it, operators offer jet-ski rides, banana boat rides and short swims in shallow water. You can also simply walk on the sand and watch the river meet the sea.

There is no shade on the island, so carry water and a cap, especially in the afternoon. Go only with registered boat operators, wear the life jacket they give you, and follow their instructions about where it is safe to stand or swim.

Trips stop during the monsoon and on rough days, when the river mouth is dangerous.
