Thibaw Palace, Ratnagiri

Heritage · Ratnagiri, Ratnagiri

The palace built in Ratnagiri for Thibaw, the last king of Burma, who lived here in exile. Now a museum, with a sunset viewpoint nearby.

After the British took Burma (Myanmar) in 1885, its last king, Thibaw Min, was sent into exile in India and spent the rest of his life in Ratnagiri. This palace was built for him and his family in the early 1900s, and he lived here until his death in 1916.

The building, with its sloping roofs, wooden floors and arched windows, now houses a museum run by the state. A short walk away, Thibaw Point looks out over the sea and the mouth of the Kajali river, and is one of the most popular sunset spots in Ratnagiri.

Check the museum's opening days and hours before you go, as government museums are usually closed one day a week. The surrounding streets are quiet and good for a walk.
