A horseshoe-shaped fort on a headland in Ratnagiri town, with the Bhagwati temple inside and a lighthouse at its tip.

Ratnadurg stands on a rocky headland that curves into the sea on the edge of Ratnagiri town, with the sea on three sides. It is also called Bhagwati Fort, after the Bhagwati temple inside its walls, which is visited by many local families.

Walk along the walls for views of the harbour, the fishing boats of Mirkarwada and the long beaches on either side of the town. A lighthouse stands at the far end of the headland.

The fort is easy to reach by road and is a good evening outing, combined with a sunset at Thibaw Point or Bhatye beach. Keep children away from the unfenced edges of the walls.

Best time to visit

October to May; evenings are pleasant. Fine in the monsoon too, with care on wet stones.

How to reach

In Ratnagiri town, a short drive from the bus stand and from Ratnagiri station on the Konkan Railway.
