Kolaba Fort, Alibag
Fort · Alibag, Raigad
A sea fort just off Alibag beach that you can walk to at low tide and reach by boat or horse cart at high tide.
Kolaba Fort sits on a rocky island a short distance from Alibag beach. Work on it began in Shivaji Maharaj's time, and it later became an important base of the Maratha navy under Kanhoji Angre, whose family was closely linked with Alibag.
The fort's walls rise straight from the sea. Inside are old water tanks, a Ganesh temple and other shrines that local people still visit. From the walls you can look back at Alibag town and the long line of the beach.
The walk across depends on the tide. At low tide the sand and rocks between the beach and the fort are exposed and many people walk over; when the water rises the path disappears quickly. Check the tide timings locally before you start, and come back in good time.
Best time to visit
October to May, at low tide. Avoid the monsoon, when the sea is rough.
How to reach
Alibag is reached by road from Pen (nearest railway station on the Konkan side) or by ferry from Mumbai to Mandwa and then by road. The fort is opposite Alibag beach.
