Jaigad Fort

Fort · Ganpatipule, Ratnagiri

A coastal fort at the mouth of the Shastri river near Ganpatipule, with old walls, a lighthouse nearby and wide views of the creek and sea.

Jaigad Fort guards the point where the Shastri river meets the Arabian Sea, north of Ganpatipule. Its position made it important for whoever controlled shipping along this part of the coast, and its strong walls and bastions are still largely standing.

Inside the walls are the remains of old buildings and a Ganpati temple. From the ramparts you can see the creek, the fishing harbour and, on clear days, a long stretch of coast. The Jaigad lighthouse stands on a nearby headland.

It makes an easy half-day trip from Ganpatipule. The paths inside the fort are uneven, so wear proper shoes and carry water.
