Amboli Hill Station
Nature · Sawantwadi, Sindhudurg

A hill station in the Sahyadri above Sawantwadi, famous for heavy monsoon rain, waterfalls, mist and rich wildlife.
Amboli is the hill station of Sindhudurg, on the crest of the Sahyadri above Sawantwadi, at the top of the ghat road that climbs from the Konkan towards Belgaum and Kolhapur. It is one of the wettest places in Maharashtra, and in the monsoon the hills are covered in mist, with waterfalls pouring down beside the road.
The monsoon is Amboli's busiest season, when visitors come for the main waterfall on the ghat, the viewpoints over the valleys and the cool air. In winter the crowds thin out, the views are clear, and the forests are pleasant for walks.
Amboli's forests are known to naturalists for their many frogs, snakes, butterflies and plants, some found nowhere else. Nature walks with local guides, especially at night in the monsoon, are popular with wildlife lovers. The temple at the source of the Hiranyakeshi river is nearby.
The ghat road is narrow and slippery in the rain, and viewpoints have steep drops. Drive slowly, stay behind railings and do not climb into waterfalls when the water is strong.
Best time to visit
June to September for the monsoon waterfalls; October to February for clear views.
